'Volunteer police' safeguard visitors on Qiniang Mountain
From:Shenzhen DailyUpdated:2020-12-22

A group of "volunteer police" walk nearly 7 kilometers a day on Qiniang Mountain to remind travelers of safety and exhort them not to visit dangerous places, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

Qiniang Mountain, the second-tallest mountain in Shenzhen, has become a favorite destination for explorers and hikers. However, there have been many cases of lost travelers on the mountain.

Tourists might notice a stone house with a strange design located at the northeast corner of a viewing platform on the peak of the mountain.

“Volunteer police” stand at the entrance to the house and tell visitors to stay away.

Zheng Binglin, head of the emergency team of Dapeng Peninsula Geopark, said that the footpath winding over a dozen kilometers behind the house towards Dayanding has not been developed, and so is difficult to conquer even for professional hikers.

“So we are based here to remind visitors. Some might not listen but we will not make a way for them,” said Zheng.

Zheng said that they normally stay at the stone house until 4 p.m. when the mountain closes.

There is no drinking water and electricity at the peak, and the area has poor reception for mobile devices. They have to carry water and food for lunch to the house in the morning from the bottom of the mountain. Each of the volunteers carries cotton-padded clothing for protection from the powerful wind in the peak area.

As the forest coverage rate of the geopark reaches 98 percent, one of the important tasks is to prevent forest fires. The water in storage tanks on the mountain was carried up by staff as there are no underground pipelines to transport water.

Since the beginning of this year, Dapeng police have handled 76 mountain rescue incidents and rescued 202 people.

Among them, dangerous incidents in the geopark (including Qiniang Mountain) account for a large proportion.

Volunteers thus have become indispensable for the prevention of incidents requiring rescue on Qiniang Mountain, said the report.

Shenzhen’s “volunteer police” are not police officers and mainly include security guards and property management staff who volunteer to fight crime and help citizens. Some of the geopark management team members also serve as “volunteer police” for the geopark.
