Yuan Geng's Ancestral Residence is located in Buxin Community, Dapeng Subdistrict, Dapeng New District. It's a practice base for learning the "four histories" — histories of the CPC, New China, reform and opening up and socialist development.

Hailed as a "pioneer of reform and opening up," Yuan was the explorer and creator of the Shekou model. He once served as the head of the Dongjiang Column's liaison division, colonel of the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade of the Guangdong People's Guerrilla Force Against Japanese Aggression and was in charge of the CPC office in Hong Kong. 

He was also the secretary of the CPC Committee of the Shekou Industrial Zone. 

He went on to create China Merchants Bank and was an early proponent of China's reform and opening up.
