Dapeng New District, situated in the southeastern part of Shenzhen, is a strategically important area within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, Dapeng offers breathtaking views with Daya Bay and Huizhou to its east and Dapeng Bay to its west. The new district encompasses a total planning area of 1,667 square kilometers, with 287 square kilometers designated for land use and 1,380 square kilometers for sea use. With a coastline stretching 125 kilometers, Dapeng New District is home to three subdistricts, Kuichong, Dapeng and Nan’ao, and 25 communities. Over the years, the district has experienced consistent GDP growth, reflecting its vibrant economic development.

Ecological special zone: 

Dapeng New District holds a special ecological status as a national ecological civilization construction demonstration zone, a national ecological civilization pilot demonstration zone, a national marine ecological civilization construction demonstration zone, and a national marine ranching demonstration area. It boasts an impressive forest coverage rate of 77.35% and is adorned with 48 natural beaches. Xichong Beach, located on the Dapeng Peninsula, has been recognized as one of the “eight most beautiful coasts in China.” The Shenzhen Dapeng Peninsula National Geopark showcases ancient volcanic geological relics that date back hundreds of millions of years. Its awe-inspiring coastal landscapes, abundant flora and fauna, and role in nature education make it an invaluable asset for Shenzhen. The water quality in the near-shore sea area is consistently rated as 100% good, and the ecological environment status index has ranked first among 125 county-level evaluation units in Guangdong for seven consecutive years. Dapeng has also earned a place on the “China’s Most Beautiful Counties” list, as well as being recognized as a national practice and innovation base for “green water and green mountains.” In 2022, it achieved impressive air quality with low PM2.5 levels and maintained its position as the city’s first eco-comfort area. By virtue of its environmental achievements, Shenzhen is truly privileged to have Dapeng as its “green lung” and “backyard garden.”

Roots of culture: 

Dapeng New District is a significant cultural and historical hub in Shenzhen, known for its rich traditional culture and collection of red cultural resources. The district is home to 139 immovable cultural relics, including two national key cultural relics protection units. Dapeng Fortress, with a history of over 600 years, is called “the root of Pengcheng. Dapeng Fortress, pronounced “Dapeng Suocheng” in Chinese, is the origin of of the abbreviation “Pengcheng” used for Shenzhen. This former site of the Dongjiang Guerrilla Column Headquarters holds historical importance as it witnessed the courageous resistance against the Japanese aggression by the Communist Party of China, making it an important site for patriotism education in the province and in the city.
Pengcheng Village, with its current name of Pengcheng Community, holds the distinction of being the only national historical and cultural village in Shenzhen. The Xiantouling Site, dating back approximately 7,000 years, was recognized as among China’s Top 10 New Archaeological Discoveries in 2006. Various intangible cultural heritages of Guangdong Province, such as the New Year’s Eve custom of boat-dwelling people (the grass dragon dance), the marriage ceremony of Nan’ao fishermen, the Dapeng custom of commemorating martyrs, and the Dapeng folk songs, have been inscribed on the provincial list of intangible cultural heritage.

Tourist attractions: 

The Dapeng Fortress Cultural Tourism Zone has received the title of “Guangdong Provincial Cultural Industry and Tourism Industry Integration Development Demonstration Zone,” while Rose Coast has been granted a national 3A-rated attraction. Notable municipal cultural industry parks include Yixiang iD Town International Art Zone and the Dapeng International Wedding Expo Park. The district has also seen the accelerated construction of major attractions such as the world’s largest LEGOLAND, the National Water Recreation and Sports Center, and the China Resources-Kaiyun Shenzhen resort business complex. Jinsha Bay International Paradise has begun taking shape as the largest coastal tourism resort in Shenzhen.

Dapeng New District hosts a variety of high-quality activities and events, such as the prestigious China Cup International Regatta and the Dapeng marathons, which are beloved by the public. These vibrant cultural activities and scenes attract an average of over 14 million tourists annually.
New growth center: Dapeng New District is poised to become a new epicenter of development, centered on the modern industrial clusters with key development on the industries including biomedicine, health, marine industry and new energy. The area’s focus lies in fostering strategic emerging industries that align with Dapeng’s unique characteristics and shaping a future-oriented industrial system. Dapeng places particular emphasis on the development of the Shenzhen International Bio-valley (Food Valley) Baguang area and the Longqi Bay Shenzhen (Dapeng) International Eco-Resort Bay, which collectively provide an expansion of more than 1 million square meters of industrial space per year. Efforts are also underway to accelerate the construction of prominent projects such as Shenzhen Ocean University, deep-sea scientific research centers, and marine museums. The aim is to create a high-quality growth center that contributes significantly to the region’s development.

In 2022, welfare and public security expenditures in Dapeng New District accounted for over 80% of the general public budget expenditure across nine categories. The new area is committed to building a civilized district and has achieved leading rankings in various indicators. Its traffic civilization index has consistently ranked among the top in the city. Dapeng has also excelled in areas such as garbage classification and reduction, securing the first position in the city. The environmental health index consistently places the region in the city’s top three for the past two years. The satisfaction levels with political and legal institutions and the sense of security among the public have consistently ranked among the highest in the city. Notable projects, such as the Shenzhen Middle School Dapeng Campus, Hongling Education Group Dapeng Campus, the city’s 23rd senior high school, and Dapeng New District People’s Hospital, have significantly accelerated the improvement of residents’ health literacy. Consequently, the region leads the city in public satisfaction with the healthcare sector.
