Glory of Baguang
From:Shenzhen DailyUpdated:2024-01-02

About 17 years ago, Baguang's looking-glass tree (Heritiera littoralis) in Dapeng New District caught the attention of a volunteer group dedicated to the preservation of Shenzhen Mangrove Forest. The presence of Baguang's looking-glass tree has attracted volunteers, experts, and scholars from both Shenzhen and other regions across the country to engage in conservation efforts in the area. Without their invaluable contributions, we would not witness the existence of looking-glass trees today, nor enjoy the well-preserved mangrove wetlands that grace our surroundings.

On Nov. 5, 2022, President Xi Jinping announced that China would strengthen cooperation on wetlands conservation and establish an international mangrove center in Shenzhen at the opening ceremony of the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP14) in Wuhan.

During the 62nd plenary meeting of the standing committee of the Ramsar Convention held in Geneva, Switzerland on Sept. 6, 2023, a draft resolution proposing the establishment of an international mangrove center in Shenzhen was officially adopted. This signifies that the center has found its home in Shenzhen.

The stories of the mangroves in Shenzhen continue, and Heritiera littoralis of Baguang will thrive under the protection of volunteers.

Please watch this documentary, follow it closely, and gain insights into the stories of these individuals and the Baguang Nature School in Dapeng New District.
