The city authority plans to reinstate Dapeng Mountain as the official name of Qiniang Mountain on the Dapeng Peninsula in eastern Shenzhen, while retaining Qiniang Mountain as an alias.
Located in Nan’ao Subdistrict, Dapeng New Area, the mountain is the second-highest peak in the city at 867.4 meters. It has been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts pursuing activities like hiking. Additionally, it is home to the Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory. In recent years, folk culture researchers and local residents have advocated for restoring the name of Dapeng Mountain, which has historical significance. The city’s planning and natural resources bureau said investigations found that both “Dapeng Mountain” and “Qiniang Mountain” were mentioned in official historical documentation. In these records, Dapeng Mountain was associated with the legendary Roc bird, indicating that the mountain was where this mythical creature was believed to reside, while Qiniang Mountain was linked with a place visited by seven fairies. The bureau also noted the renaming will enhance public understanding of the historical background of Shenzhen, which is often referred to as the “City of the Roc,” help preserve urban heritage, and strengthen cultural identity. Public opinions on the renaming can be submitted before Oct. 28.
