Come to Dapeng to view the total lunar eclipse!
From:Shenzhen DailyUpdated:2026-02-20

A total lunar eclipse, considered one of the year’s most notable astronomical events, will be visible to the naked eye on March 3, coinciding with the Lantern Festival, offering skywatchers a rare opportunity that will not recur under similar viewing conditions for about a decade, astronomy observers said.

In Shenzhen, moonrise is expected at approximately 6:22 p.m., meaning the moon will already be partially eclipsed as it appears above the horizon — a phenomenon known as a “rising eclipsed moon.” During totality, the moon’s elevation will remain below 9 degrees, creating favorable conditions for photographing the reddish “blood moon” alongside city and natural landscapes. Observers without photography equipment will still be able to watch the partially shadowed moon slowly rise in the eastern sky.

Experts recommend choosing east-facing locations with open views and minimal obstructions. Popular viewing spots include Shenzhen Bay, Xichong Beach, Yangtai Mountain and Tanglang Mountain, where light pollution is relatively low.

Among them, Xichong stands out as China’s first and Asia’s second International Dark Sky Community. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the sea, the area offers clear night skies rarely found in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Together with science outreach programs at the nearby Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory, visitors can enjoy immersive stargazing experiences, with the moon, stars and ocean forming a scenic backdrop for Lantern Festival celebrations.
