The firefly viewing season from April to June has become a major draw for tourists to the Xichong International Dark Sky Community, helping drive local cultural and tourism consumption. The area has received more than 900,000 visitors so far this year.

Since receiving the International Dark Sky Community certification in 2023, Xichong has implemented scientific light pollution controls that have significantly improved its ecological environment and increased annual firefly activity. Once a niche destination for stargazing enthusiasts, the community has developed a range of public-facing experiences, including wetland firefly trails and dark-sky science programs, making astronomy and ecological education more accessible to families and children.

Since 2025, with scientific support from the Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory, the community has organized more than 100 online and offline outreach activities, attracting over 43.8 million online views. The Xichong Dark Sky Planetarium has also launched immersive programs combining daytime observatory visits with nighttime firefly watching, integrating science education with nature tourism.
Alongside tourism development, Xichong has strengthened ecological protection efforts. The community has partnered with environmental organizations, surfing groups and residents to conduct coastal cleanup campaigns. It has also established volunteer patrol teams to regularly monitor riverbanks and key firefly habitats.
Xichong has also upgraded its tourism offerings. Local hotels and guesthouses now provide telescopes and tailored stargazing guidance based on weather conditions. Tourism operators have introduced themed packages combining ecological exploration, nature education and group activities, catering to corporate retreats, school trips and family travelers.
