Investigation finds no evidence of sewage discharge at Jiaochangwei beach
From:Shenzhen DailyUpdated:2026-07-17

A recent online post claiming sewage was being discharged into the sea at Jiaochangwei beach in Dapeng has drawn public attention. An on-site investigation found no evidence supporting the claim.

The area mentioned in the post is located near the estuary of Pengcheng River. During a recent visit amid rainy and windy weather, reporters from sznews.com found no noticeable foul odor, visible sewage outlets or hidden pipes at the site.

The Dapeng branch of the Shenzhen Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau said the area has only municipal stormwater drainage facilities and no outlets for concentrated discharge of domestic sewage or industrial wastewater. The claim that sewage was being directly released into the sea was not supported by evidence.

Local residents said the dark-colored water and odor occasionally observed near the estuary are likely related to natural tidal changes. As seawater flows back during high tides, riverbed sediment rich in organic matter can be stirred up and exposed, creating temporary changes in water color and smell.

The environmental authority said rainfall runoff during the flood season may carry small amounts of surface debris, but Jiaochangwei, a popular coastal tourism destination, is subject to regular water quality monitoring, with no abnormal indicators detected so far.
