Xichong International Dark Sky Community has been selected as one of the recommended stargazing destinations in China’s 2026 Summer Stargazing Guide released by the China Meteorological Administration.
The guide highlights the role of weather conditions in stargazing, noting that factors such as cloud cover, atmospheric transparency, seeing conditions, weather patterns, light pollution and moon phases all affect the quality of observations.
Experts said clear or slightly cloudy nights with high atmospheric transparency provide the best conditions for stargazing, while lower atmospheric turbulence helps improve the clarity of astronomical photography.
The guide was developed through a comprehensive assessment of observation sites, regional characteristics, monthly climate conditions and potential risks, aiming to provide both professional and public-friendly recommendations for safer and more enjoyable stargazing experiences.
Xichong became China’s first international dark sky community in 2023 after efforts to reduce light pollution and protect the natural night environment. The area has since become a popular destination for astronomy enthusiasts and visitors seeking immersive nature experiences.
