SZ upgrades typhoon alert to yellow

The Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory upgraded the blue alert for Super Typhoon Saola to yellow at 6 p.m. In response to the typhoon, coastal attractions and the observatory in Dapeng New District have been closed for safety. 

According to the observatory, the super typhoon, which is now less than 500 kilometers away from Shenzhen, is moving northwest at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour to approach the coastal areas of eastern and middle Guangdong. 

The opening day of the new semester for middle schools, primary schools and kindergartens in Shenzhen has been postponed from Sept. 1 to Sept. 4 as Super Typhoon Saola approaches, according to information released this afternoon by Live Shenzhen, the official WeChat account of the Information Office of Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. 

Universities and colleges in the city may also postpone their new semester to ensure the safety of students and staff. 

It will make landfall somewhere in the coastal areas stretching from Guangdong's Huilai county to Hong Kong tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night, or move west by south and pass through the waters of eastern Guangdong without making landfall, the National Meteorological Center said in a statement. 
Shenzhen is forecast to experience heavy rainfall to rainstorm from tomorrow afternoon to Saturday, with some areas forecast to experience severe rainstorm. The wind will get stronger tomorrow, with the strongest gusts expected to reach Force 14 to 16 on the on the Beaufort Wind Scale.
Residents are advised to minimize inessential outdoor activities and take appropriate precautionary measures.
